Study Guide: Why do I need these pairs for the Future?
The Logic of the Future Tense
In Czech, you cannot form the future tense correctly if you don't know the aspect of the verb. This list focuses on verbs that change their "middle" (the stem) rather than just adding a prefix.
The "Budu" Rule:
Only Imperfective verbs (usually the longer ones like prodávat, kupovat) use the form budu + infinitive.
The Perfective Future:
Perfective verbs (shorter ones like prodám, koupím) express the future just by being conjugated in the present tense. No "budu" allowed!
Pattern Recognition:
- ✔ Pattern A (-vat): Perfective dát becomes Imperfective dávat. Note the "va" insertion.
- ✔ Pattern B (Stem lengthening): uklidit (P) becomes uklízet (I). Note the vowel change i → í.
- ✔ Pattern C (Irregular): vzít (P) becomes brát (I). These must be memorized individually.
