Study Guide: The Secret of Czech Verbal Aspect
Czech Aspect Pairs and Their Context
In Czech, most verbs exist in pairs. One describes the process (Imperfective), and the other describes the result or completion (Perfective). This list helps you learn them as single units.
Common Patterns:
Most perfective verbs are created by adding a prefix: u- (udělat, uvařit), na- (napsat, namalovat), or za- (zaplatit, zatelefonovat).
When to use what?
Use the Imperfective (psát, číst) for habits and what you are doing right now. Use the Perfective (napsat, přečíst) when you want to say "it's done" or "it will be done."
The HáCZech Learning Path:
- ✔ Step 1: Memorize the pairs together. Never learn "číst" without also learning "přečíst."
- ✔ Step 2: Use the 🧠 Practice link to drill your speed in identifying the result-verb.
- ✔ Step 3: Confirm your mastery with the 📝 Test.
