Genitive (2nd Case) – Vocabulary

Czech English
Study Guide: Understanding the 2nd Case (Genitiv)

Genitive Case Prepositions and Noun Patterns

The Genitive case (2. pád) is used more frequently than almost any other oblique case in Czech. This vocabulary list focuses on the prepositions that trigger this case and the standard "paradigm" nouns used to learn endings.

Common Prepositions:

Learn u (at), bez (without), do (to), and z (from). These are essential for explaining where you are and where you are going.

Possession & Quantity:

In Czech, we don't use 's for possession. Instead, we use the Genitive (e.g., sestra přítele). We also use it after numbers (5 and up) and quantity words like mnoho or trochu.

The HáCZech Mastery Path:

  • Step 1: Memorize the Genitive prepositions list.
  • Step 2: Practice applying endings to the paradigm nouns (pán, hrad, žena, at ordered).
  • Step 3: Test your knowledge with the 📝 Test section.
