Exam Instructions: Core Directional Logic

The Logic of "Where to?"

This middle-level test ensures you understand the fundamental "pairs" of Czech prefixes. Most directional prefixes come in opposites. Mastering these pairs allows you to describe almost any movement accurately.

Primary Pairs:

  • Při- vs. Od-: Arriving at a place vs. leaving a place.
  • V- (vno-) vs. Vy-: Entering a space vs. exiting a space.
  • S- vs. Roz-: Coming together vs. moving apart.

Focus Verbs:

This test primarily uses the verbs jít/jet (to go) and cházet/jíždět to show how the meaning shifts with a simple prefix.

Success Tips:

  • Look for the Preposition: Use prepositions as your guide—do (into) usually needs v-, while z (out of) needs vy-.
  • Arriving vs. Leaving: Think about the "goal." If the person is now here, use při-. If they are gone, use od-.
  • Timer: 10 minutes. Take a moment to visualize the arrow of direction for each question.
