Training Guide: The -at Conjugation Class
Active Recall: Regular -at Verbs (-ám Pattern)
This session focuses on the first and most predictable group of Czech verbs. By mastering the -at suffix, you can easily transition to the 1st person singular -ám ending used in daily life.
The -ám Pattern:
Notice how dělat becomes dělám and běhat becomes běhám. This predictability makes this group the best place to start for beginner students.
Practical Usage:
Practice using Dám si when ordering at a restaurant or Mám to express possession or likes (Mám rád). These are high-utility conversational phrases.
Practice Strategy:
- ✔ Step 1: Identify the infinitive (the word ending in -at).
- ✔ Step 2: Translate the full sentence to see how the verb functions in context.
- ✔ Step 3: Repeat the Czech sentences aloud to internalize the long 'á' sound.
